6 Food Items To Make Your Lohri Complete.

Lohri is a popular winter time Punjabi folk festival, celebrated by Sikhs and Hindus. The importance about the Lohri festival are many, Lohri marks the end of winter season, and is a traditional welcome of longer days and sun’s journey to the northern hemisphere by Sikhs and Hindus of India, on 13 January. India being a secular country is home to many different religions and each festival  celebration is incomplete without food, so is Lohri. The celebration of Lohri would be incomplete without great food. The typical and more unknown being “Ganne Ki ras ki kheer” (Rice pudding made with sugarcane juice), A special khichdi(made out of mixture of 5 pulses), Makhane, Revadi, Poah(flattened rice).

1. Gajjak

  • Gajjak (also gachak) is a well-known dessert originating in India.
  • A sweet made up of sesame seeds(til) or peanuts and jaggery.
  • The nuts are cooked in raw sugar syrup, therefore set in thin layers.

2. Sarson Ka Saag

  • A popular dish from the region of Punjab and Rajastan.
  • Sarson, Palak(spinach) and bathua  are the main ingredients
  • They are cooked with onions, tomatoes and different Indian ground spices and topped with makhan or desi-ghee therefore enhancing the flavor even more.
  • Its legendary partner Makki Di Roti made with corn meal and yellow in color when cooked and served with makkhan on top of it.

3. Baigan Ka Bharta

  • Baigan ka Bharta is a vegetarian dish that is prepared by mincing baingan (EGGPLANT) that is grilled over charcoal or direct fire. This infuses the dish with a smoky flavour. The smoked and mashed eggplant is then mixed with cooked chopped tomatoes, onion, ginger, garlic, cumin, fresh coriander leaves, chili peppers, mustard oil or neutral vegetable oil.
  • It is served with Bajra ki Roti (indian bread made out of millet flour) topped with white makkhan or desi ghee.

4. Gajar Ka Halwa

  • Milk sugar and water are taken in specific amount and grated carrot is added to it and cooked to a boil.
  • Served hot with the garnish of almonds, cashew and pistachios

5. Pindi Chole

  • A dish made out of chickpeas in chana Masala served with sliced or chopped onions, lemon slices, and green chilies
  • Bathura, Naan, Roti or Poori go well with it.
  • Recommended place : DILLIWALE – Vastrapur
